New Zealand’’s Oram retires from TestsWELLINGTON: Injury-plagued New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram announced Tuesday he is retiring from Test cricket in a bid to prolong his career in the shorter forms of the game. The 31-year-old, forced out of the recent Champions Trophy one-day tournament with a hamstring injury, said he would continue to be available for one-day internationals and Twenty20 cricket. “The last few years have shown that my body cannot handle the strains and stresses that come with being an all-rounder, playing all three formats for up to 10 months a year,” Oram said. “For the sake of longevity I have had to make a decision that will decrease my workload, so I can concentrate all my efforts on the shorter forms of the game.” Oram, who made his Test debut in 2002, scored 1,780 runs in 33 matches at an average of 36.32, including five centuries. He took 60 wickets at 33.05, taking over from Chris Cairns as New Zealand’’s top all-rounder. His international one-day batting average is a more modest 24.40, and he has taken 132 wickets at 30.99 in 132 matches. Oram had put off a decision about his career despite a spate of injuries over the past year. “However, in light of my latest injury at the Champions Trophy it has become clear to me that now is the time to sacrifice something to try and stay in the game longer,” he said. The 2011 World Cup is in his sights and he said he would like to continue for a couple of seasons after that if his body holds out. New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan said he understood Oram’’s decision. “Jacob has made a tremendous contribution to our Test team over the past seven seasons, and his experience will be missed,” Vaughan said. “But we fully understand the difficulties he’’s faced with injuries and we hope this decision will help him prolong his playing career.”

US faults Turks for canceling NATO air exercisesWASHINGTON: The United States has chided Turkey for canceling a NATO military exercise because Israel also was participating.Neither the Turks nor NATO has confirmed that Israel’’s participation in the exercises over Turkey was Ankara’’s reason for pulling out.State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Tuesday, however, “as to the question of whether there was a government that was invited to participate and then removed at the last minute, we think it’’s inappropriate for any nation to be removed from an exercise like this at the last minute.”He was asked whether that was what happened and whether Israel was the spurned country. He confirmed both.Muslim Turkey’’s traditionally close ties with the Jewish state have cooled since the Israel-Hamas Gaza war in January.

NASA spacecraft snaps first footage of solar tsunamiNEW YORK: Images from the twin STEREO spacecraft show, for the first time, a solar tsunami blasting its way through the Sun’’s lower atmosphere. Solar tsunamis are launched by huge explosions near the Sun’’s atmosphere, called coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Although solar tsunamis share much in common with tsunamis on Earth, the solar version can travel at over a million kilometres per hour. The tsunami took place on 19th May 2007 and lasted for about 35 minutes, reaching peak speeds around 20 minutes after the initial blast. The observations were made by a team from Trinity College Dublin.'’The energy released in these explosions is phenomenal, about two billion times the annual world energy consumption in just a fraction of a second. In half an hour, we saw the tsunami cover almost the full disc of the Sun, nearly a million kilometres away from the epicentre,'’ said Long.STEREO’’s Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUVI) instruments monitor the Sun at four wavelengths, which correspond to temperatures ranging between 60 000 and 2 million degrees Celsius. At the lowest of these temperatures, scientists can see structures in the chromosphere, a thin layer of the solar atmosphere that lies just above the Sun’’s visible surface. At temperatures between 1 and 2 million degrees Celsius, scientist can monitor features at varying levels in the solar corona. The SOHO spacecraft, which was launched in 1995, also monitors the Sun at these wavelengths but only took images four times per day, giving scientists rare snapshots of these tsunamis. STEREO’’s EUVI instruments take an image every few minutes to create a series, making it possible for scientists to track how the wave spreads over time. This is the first time that a tsunami has been observed at all four wavelengths, which enabled the team to see how the wave moved through the different layers of the solar atmosphere.'’To our surprise, the tsunami seems to move with similar speed and acceleration through all the layers. As the chromosphere is much denser than the corona, we'’d expect the pulse there to drag. It’’s a real puzzle,'’ said Dr Peter Gallagher. To complicate matters, the interval between images is not the same for all four cameras. At the time of the tsunami, the cameras monitoring radiation at 1 million degrees Celsius were set to take an image every 2.5 minutes. They recorded much higher speeds and accelerations for the wave than the other cameras, which were on 10 or 20 minute cycles. By taking a sample of one image in four, the data from these cameras matched the lower values observed in the other layers.'’We'’ve thought for some time that the tsunamis might be caused by magnetic shockwaves but, in previous snapshots, the waves appeared to be travelling too slowly. However, we'’ve seen from this set of observations that if the time interval between images is too long, it’’s easy to underestimate the speed that the waves are moving. With a few more rapid-sequence observations of solar tsunamis, we should finally be able to identify the cause of these waves,'’ said Gallagher.

Rationalizer bracelet, bowl combo for stressedLONDON: As well as doing hot TVs such as this one, Dutch electronics company Philips does a neat line in Weird Stuff. They'’ve just hooked up with ABN Amro, a bank that must have its fair share of stressed-out bean counters, to create something that stops them making stupid decisions — a Rationalizer bracelet and bowl.If you'’re over-excited or over-stressed the bracelet will send messages to the bowl which will then start glowing. Geert Christiaansen, Philips'’ Weird Stuff head honcho, calls it a “Galvanic skin response sensor. It’’s a nice way of saying it measures the way you sweat.”What is amusing about the Rationalizer is that it works better with man. And you know why? “Women are less emotional investors,” says some bloke at ABN Amro. “Men have too much attachment to the underlying assets. Women don'’t have that as much.” Next up, legislation outlawing anyone in possession of dos cojones from working in the financial sector.

Kaira rules out change in military high commandISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira Wednesday brushed aside speculations of changing the military high command. There is no such a move or ground realities to change the Chief of Army Staff, he said while talking to mediapersons after seeing off Prince Karim Aga Khan here at Chaklala Airbase. Prince Karim visited Pakistan to review the development projects being undertaken by Aga Khan Development Foundation across the country. Replying to a question regarding the visit of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to United States, Qamar Zaman Kaira said all political parties and their leaders have already given their views on Kerry-Lugar Bill and Qureshi has gone to convey their opinion to US administration. He said Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has also taken all political parties into confidence on the issue. He said the recent terrorist attack on GHQ is being probed by military and civil security agencies and their findings would be assessed by the concerned high command. On a question regarding tabling of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) in the parliament, he said when required the ordinance would be presented according to the Supreme Court’’s verdict. He said overall law and order situation in Gilgit-Baltistan is satisfactory, however there is some problem in small portion of Gilgit and efforts were being made to normalize the situation in consultation with political forces and elders of the area. The Minister said the PPP government has given a historic and comprehensive political and economic package for the welfare of people of Gilgit-Baltistan. He said people of the area have expressed their satisfaction over the arrangements made by the government. He said the forthcoming elections of Gilgit-Baltistan legislative assembly would be held in free, fair and transparent manner, adding that it is for the first time that the elections are being held in the area under the supervision of judiciary and an independent election commission. He said the decision for launching military operation in South Waziristan has been taken in principle and it would be launched after preparations of field commanders. The Minister said the military operation is not against any area or tribe as it is only against the miscreants and terrorists who are challenging writ of the government. The Minister said the government appreciates the cooperation and contribution of the business community. He particularly referred to the gesture of a renowned Pakistani business icon who has offered to bring more than a billion dollar to Pakistan to help improve the economy. The Minister said the government has already announced incentives for foreign remittances which would help boost country’s foreign reserve and economy. He said though the government gets fiscal space through such foreign remittances, these cannot meet development needs. Answering another question, he said the dialogue is the only way to move forward and resolve issues between Pakistan and India which has also been stated by the Indian Prime Minister.
