NEW DELHI: Kings XI Punjab beat Rajasthan Royals by 41 runs in the 56th Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday. Chasing a big target of 222 runs set by Kings XI Punjab, the Rajasthan team scored 180 for the loss of seven wickets. Niraj Patel (57) was the top scorer for the Rajasthan team. For Punjab, Piyush Chawla took three wickets, while James Hopes scalped two. Earlier, put in to bat first by Royals, Kings XI Punjab scored a formidable 222 for three wickets against the Rajasthan team in the last league match of the IPL. Shaun Marsh scored an electrifying 115 off 69 balls that included seven sixes. Marsh was rightly adjudged Man of the Match. Hopes scored 51 while Yuvraj Singh raced to a breathtaking 49 off just 15 deliveries, of which six were dispatched for massive sixes. Yusuf Pathan took one wicket, giving 24 runs.

KARACHI: Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices have registered an increase of Rs15 to Rs20 per cylinder. Chairman LPG Distributors Association, Hadi Khan told Geo News on Thursday that the new per kilogram price of LPG will go up by Rs1.50 to Rs20.He said the LPG producers had withdrawn Rs3000 to Rs4000 per tonne rebate they allowed to the marketing companies.

KABUL: NATO air strikes on a militant fort in the remote southwest of Afghanistan left 30 Taliban dead. The rebels suffered heavy casualties in the southwestern province of Farah, Afghan security commanders said. Afghan forces and troops from NATO’’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) surrounded a compound where rebels had massed in Bala Buluk district, the army commander for western Afghanistan told foreign news agency. In initial fighting, two Afghan soldiers and a policeman were killed and several were wounded, said the commander. “Later, ISAF air planes bombed the fort and 30 Taliban including their ranking commanders were killed,” he said. “There is no one left inside the fort.” The Farah deputy police chief, Mohammad Nabi Popal, also said 30 Taliban were killed as was one of his policemen. “They were mostly Taliban from Helmand, he said.

WASHINGTON: The US Army have said that 115 soldiers on active duty committed suicide in 2007, the most in one year since the service began keeping records in 1980. Nearly a thousand soldiers attempted suicide. The spike came in a year that saw the highest US casualties in Iraq and increased levels of violence in Afghanistan, but officials said the trend has continued into 2008. Barack Obama, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, called it “a tragic reminder of the staggering and ongoing costs of the Iraq war, particularly on our troops and their families.” Army officials acknowledged that long and repeated combat deployments were a major source of stress in soldiers'’ lives, but they found no direct relationship between increased conflict and suicides. “In terms of this current conflict we see a lot of things going on in the war which do contribute,” said Colonel Elspeth Ritchie. “Mainly it is the long time and multiple deployments away from home, the exposure to really terrifying and horrifying things, the easy availability of loaded weapons, and, of course, it’’s very, very busy right now,” she said. In a report, the army said the 115 confirmed suicides raised the suicide rate to 18.8 percent per thousand for the active duty army in 2007, or 16.6 percent if based on a larger pool that includes reservists on active duty. The suicide rate among active service members was 17.3 per 100,000 in 2006, compared to 12.8 in 2005 and 10.8 in 2004. In 2001 the rate was 9.8 per 100,000. The suicide rate for the US population, adjusted for the age group and gender, is 19.5 percent.
