rispost New Zealand, Australia welcome ICC Trophy postponement

August 26th, 2008

SYDNEY: New Zealand and Australia cricket authorities have both welcomed the decision to postpone the Champions Trophy in Pakistan for security reasons.Faced with the safety concerns of five countries, the International Cricket Council decided on Sunday to postpone the limited overs tournament from next month until October 2009. However, the tournament will remain in Pakistan on the condition that the security situation in the country improves.New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan said he was relieved that the ICC’’s decision removed from the burden of having to decide whether to withdraw from the tournament from New Zealand Cricket. The New Zealand Cricket Players'’ Association had recommended its members did not travel to Pakistan and New Zealand would likely have joined South Africa, Australia, England and West Indies in bypassing the event. Vaughan said the current security situation in Pakistan had made the ICC decision unavoidable. “It’’s disappointing to have to postpone the tournament but in the end it was a rigorous process that was followed and in the end the security advice around Pakistan has just been too tough to overcome,” he said. The ICC’’s announcement meant New Zealand were spared making a public decision on whether to play in the tournament. “We wanted to see the process run its course and in the end we didn'’t have to make a call,” he said.Captain of England team Kevin Petersen has termed the decision victory of cricket.

rispost Israel frees 198 prisoners in gesture to Abbas

August 26th, 2008

RAMALLAH: Israel on Monday freed nearly 200 Palestinian prisoners, including a militant mastermind who had been jailed for three decades, in a confidence-building measure aimed at breathing new life into slow-moving Mid east peace talks. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, opening a new round of shuttle diplomacy, praised the Israeli gesture as a “sign of goodwill.”'’ The freed Palestinians were greeted as heroes all over the West Bank. However, putting the celebrations in perspective, President Mahmoud Abbas and other Palestinians demanded that Israel release all 9,000 prisoners it is holding. The prisoner release was not part of a larger peace deal. Instead, it was meant to bolster the moderate Abbas in his struggle against the militant Islamic Hamas, which overran Gaza last year andis threatening his position in the West Bank. Hamas is holding an Israeli soldier and demanding freedom for hundreds of prisoners in exchange for him. Monday’’s release was meant to show that moderate Palestinian leaders can also achieve freedom for prisoners. Late Monday, Israel decided to close crossings to Gaza, halting shipment of supplies, the Defense Ministry said, after Gazamilitants fired two rockets at Israel in violation of a June 18truce. No one was hurt.

rispost Iraq, US agree no foreign troops after 2011: PM

August 26th, 2008

BAGHDAD: Iraqi Premier Nuri al-Maliki said on Monday Washington and Baghdad have agreed there will be no foreign forces in Iraq after 2011, setting a timeline for a US withdrawal from the war-torn country. Maliki stressed however that despite “significant progress”, there are “still points of disagreement crucial to both sides” in the proposed security pact that will decide the future of US forces in Iraq. The White House, too, stressed on Monday there was no final accord with Baghdad on the controversial issue. “These discussions continue, as we have not yet finalised an agreement,” spokesman Tony Fratto said as US President George W. Bush was on his annual August vacation on his ranch in Crawford, Texas. A statement issued by Maliki’’s office quoted the prime minister as telling a gathering of tribal leaders in Baghdad’’s fortified Green Zone that accord had been reached on a timeline. “There is an agreement between the two sides that there will be no foreign soldiers in Iraq after 2011,” the statement said. Among sticking points still to be resolved, however, is a demand that foreign troops stationed in the country cannot enjoy open-ended immunity. Iraqi and US officials have for months been negotiating the controversial military security pact governing the presence of foreign troops that will come into force once a UN mandate expires in December.
