rispost Power outage spurs UPS, generators sale

March 18th, 2009

KARACHI: The demand for UPS and generators by the electricity consumers surging, in the wake of the approaching summer and apathy of the government and private power companies, who thus far have miserably failed to come up with any solution of the lingering power crisis, testing the patience of the agonized people. Following failure of Wapda and Kesc coming up with any proper strategy that could meet the increased electricity demands during summer, the consumers have made a beeline for buying UPS and generators. According to official figures, the country pre-summer is facing a shortfall of 2500MW to 3000MW of electricity, which is expected to rise up to 5000MW that could further prolong the duration of the load shedding to 10/12 hours per day.Analyst said that the government assures every year ending load shedding, but marred by the ongoing power struggles, no tangible efforts were visible in this regard, while the people cursing the self-seeker politicians buying UPS an generators as a safeguard to the impending deluge.

rispost Kiwis shatter India’s final hopes in Women World Cup

March 18th, 2009

SYDNEY: New Zealand inched closer to the Women Cricket World Cup final with a five-wicket win over India in the Super Six stage here at the North Sydney Oval on Tuesday. Batting first, India were all out for 207 in 49.4 overs. They reached their second 200-plus total of the tournament only after Anjum Chopra (52) and Mithali Raj (21) pulled them out of trouble. Chopra and Raj put on 36 runs but only at three an over. It was left to the lower order to provide some push and Reema Malhotra did just that with a quickfire maiden half-century. She remained unbeaten on 59, got good support from the tail, adding 27 at more than five an over with Amita Sharma (14 off 16) and 44 at more than nine an over with Harmanpreet Kaur (13 off 16).However, the New Zealand medium-pacers, Nicola Browne and Bates, bowled very well with accurate line and length to keep India’s scoring rate down. The target of 208 was competitive but Kate Pulford set up the chase with an 89-ball 71 and a nerveless Suzie Bates (47 not out) saw them through after the Indian spinners had struck with quick wickets. The 78-run opening partnership between Pulford and Haidee Tiffen - their first half-century stand of the tournament - put New Zealand on the course of victory. India are ahead of New Zealand on net run-rate and can still reach the final, but only if they beat West Indies, New Zealand go down to Pakistan and Australia lose to England.

rispost US mulling expanded covert war in Pakistan: report

March 18th, 2009

WASHINGTON President Barack Obama and his national security advisers are considering expanding the covert U.S. war in Pakistan far beyond the tribal areas near the border with Afghanistan, US newspaper reported. Two high-level reports on Pakistan and Afghanistan that have been forwarded to the White House in recent weeks have called for broadening the target area to reach the Taliban and other insurgent groups to a major sanctuary in and around the city of Quetta, the newspaper said on its website, citing senior administration officials. Missile strikes by Central Intelligence Agency-operated drones have until now been limited to the tribal areas, and never been extended into Balochistan, a sprawling province under the authority of Pakistan’’s central government, and which is next to parts of Afghanistan where recent fighting has been fiercest, the newspaper website said. Some American officials say the missile strikes in the tribal areas have forced some leaders of the Taliban and al Qaeda to flee toward Quetta, making them more vulnerable, the report said. Pakistan has complained that the missile strikes violate its sovereignty. Many of Obama’’s advisers are also urging him to sustain orders issued last summer by former President George W. Bush to continue Predator drone attacks against a wider range of targets in the tribal areas, and to conduct cross-border ground actions, using CIA and Special Operations commandos. The report said a spokesman for the National Security Council had declined to provide details, saying only “We'’re still working hard to finalize the review on Afghanistan and Pakistan that the president requested.” No other official would talk on the record on the issue, citing the administration’’s deliberations and the politically volatile nature of strikes into Pakistan’’s territory, the report said.

rispost Woolmer a great loss to Pakistan: Yunus

March 18th, 2009

KARACHI: Pakistan captain Younus Khan spoke on Wednesday of how he would never forget Bob Woolmer, as the cricket world marked the second anniversary of the former national team coach’s death.Woolmer, who had been a Test batsman for England, took Pakistan to the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies but died prematurely in shocking circumstances during the tournament.‘I can never forget Bob, with his sincere and untiring efforts he could have lifted Pakistan cricket to top level,’ said Younus.Woolmer, 58, was found dead in his hotel room in Jamaica on March 18, 2007, one day after Pakistan was sensationally knocked out of the World Cup following a shock defeat to outsiders Ireland.Pakistani players came under intense investigation when Woolmer’s death was initially treated as murder. Some commentators insist Woolmer was killed to stop him blowing the whistle on illegal betting, the curse of the game in Asia. But after a detailed inquiry Jamaican police declared Woolmer died of natural causes. The anniversary comes as Pakistani cricket remains in disarray following the March 3 ambush of the Sri Lankan team bus by armed militants in Lahore, when eight people died.
